Why do floor drains keep clogging at my restaurant?

Floor drains in commercial kitchens clog frequently because they are exposed to a constant flow of food debris, grease (FOG), and foreign objects that shouldn’t be entering the plumbing system in the first place.

The most common causes include:

  • Food solids and trash being swept or washed into floor sinks
  • Grease buildup (FOG) that hardens inside pipes over time
  • Lack of proper drain strainers or baskets to catch debris
  • Employees using drains as disposal points during cleaning
  • Improper drain design or missing protective devices

Unlike residential systems, commercial kitchens produce a much higher volume of waste in a short period of time. Without proper protection, that material accumulates quickly—leading to slow drainage, backups, foul odors, and expensive plumbing repairs.

The most effective way to prevent recurring clogs is to stop debris before it enters the drain. This is typically done using floor sink baskets, drain strainers, or drain locks, which act as a first line of defense by capturing solids and preventing large objects from entering the plumbing system.

By combining the right drain protection products with routine maintenance, facilities can significantly reduce emergency service calls and extend the life of their plumbing system.
